What is Taekwondo?

Taekwondo is a martial art originating in Korea. The term Taekwondo is derived from three words: Tae meaning foot, Kwon meaning fist and Do meaning method, art or way. It is a literal description of an art consisting of foot and hand techniques.

What are the benefits of Taekwondo?

Taekwondo is for all ages, for males and females, for beginners to advanced students. It is a martial art that is not just for fighting or self-defence, but aims to develop attitudes of self-control, will power, humility and loyalty, whilst improving fitness, flexibility and coordination. The discipline of the sport also improves the student’s confidence in their ability to cope with stressful situations.

What do I do in Taekwondo classes?

All classes start with a warm-up followed by systematic stretching exercises. Next, skills learnt over previous weeks will be practised. Then, following a predetermined syllabus, a week by week program covers development in hand and kicking techniques, patterns, self-defence and free sparring.

What equipment do I need to train in Taekwondo?

Students will be required to wear a Taekwondo uniform within a reasonable time of joining the club. To ensure the safety of all students a mouthguardshin and arm guards, and a groin guard will be required. These can be purchased through the club. All other equipment required for training purposes will be supplied.
